On two consecutive Sundays in June and July, LAB-1 will screen the award-winning 2003 film La meglio gioventù (The Best of Youth). The film charts the social and political story of Italy from the mid-1960s through the early 2000s, via the saga of two brothers, Matteo and Nicola Carati. Originally planned as a four-part mini-series, the film was presented at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival where it won the Un Certain Regard award. It was then given a theatrical run in Italy, as well as in Europe and the U.S.. The six-hour film will be shown in two installments.

 

Italië 2003. Veelbekroond met een lengte van maar liefst 6 uren! Giordana kijkt in La meglio gioventu (het beste van de jeugdjaren) terug op de recente geschiedenis van zijn vaderland via de levens van twee Romeinse broers. De idealistische Nicola (Lo Cascio) ambieert een carrière in de psychiatrie, de meer getroebleerde Matteo (Boni) gaat bij de politie. Familieomstandigheden, maatschappelijke en politieke gebeurtenissen zorgen ervoor dat de twee afwisselend naar elkaar toe worden getrokken of juist weer ver uit elkaar worden gedreven. Eigenlijk bedoeld als een mini voor de tv, maar op festivals vertoond (en bekroond), waardoor deze indrukwekkende kroniek bioscoop status heeft verkregen.
